Gorham was settled in 1736 as Narragansett Number 7, one of several townships granted to soldiers and descendants from the Narragansett campaign of King Philip's War. Traces of that early history survive in the town's historic village center and its stock of 18th- and 19th-century homes.
Today Gorham is best known as a college town — the University of Southern Maine's residential campus sits right in the village — while the town around it remains one of the fastest-growing communities in Cumberland County, with new neighborhoods spreading across former farmland.
